Although any amateur or semi-professional musician can utilize the music contained in these three volumes, the format, as outlined, was designed to aid and enhance the performance of working musicians, either in planning, or while performing their next "gig".  The following is an explanation as to how and why it is arranged as it is.

Quite frequently the performer is faced with, not so much what song to play, e.g., a medium swing, a slow waltz, a fast rock, a two-beat, a slow ballad, etc.  Along with that, it may be desirable to play something from some particular time period, or "era".  For instance, if playing for, say, a 25th anniversary function, it might be effective, or even requested, to play some songs that were popular 25 years prior to that event.  In addition, not infrequently, someone will request a song that was particularly meaningful to them 20, 30, 40 or even 50 years ago.  At this point it could be very effective, or desirable, not only to play that song, but play a medley of songs from that time period, as well.

Bearing this in mind, notice that the major rhythm categories, followed by the dates in parentheses, (as indicated on the following page), have been arranged, not only in tempos but also in chronological order.

Obviously, many songs can be played at a variety of tempos.  However when these categories were established, careful consideration was given to; (1) the general "feeling" or "mood" of the song; (2) the frequency of the harmonic changes and; (3) the most comfortable and desirable tempo, if the song is to be sung.

The dates shown above the songs indicate when the song enjoyed its highest popularity.  If two dates are noted, e.g., 1917-54, the later date usually takes precedence.  When the letter "A" appears after the date, it means that the song was the Academy Award Winner for the year.  For the Christmas holiday season, a 60 Christmas song supplement, with its own index, is included in the back of Volume 2, and for convenience, it can be removed and used separately, if so desired.  If any song required more than one page, it will always start on the left-hand page, eliminating any need to ever turn a page in order to finish the song.

There are no "obscure" or unfamiliar tunes in this compilation. They have all enjoyed noticeable recognition.  This three volume set contains probably at lease 95% of the songs most often reuested or needed from the "main stream" American Pop Musical Library from 1900 to the late 1970's.  There are 730 songs in Volume 1, 816 songs in Volume 2 and 874 in Volume 3, Totaling 2420 songs.

Happy (organized) gigging!
